Cold Chain Management in Warehouses

Cold Chain Management in Warehouses
Due to the accelerating pace of life, changes in consumption habits, and ease of use, the share of chilled and frozen products in our lives is increasing day by day.
A significant portion of food and medicine is delivered from production to the end consumer using the cold chain method. Preserving products at the correct temperature throughout this entire process is both a serious legal and moral obligation, as well as an important factor that can lead to commercial losses.
Products must reach the end consumer without any break in the cold chain. Therefore, managing the logistics process requires great expertise, accumulated knowledge, and the use of climate-controlled vehicles and warehouses.
One of the most important elements of this chain is climate-controlled warehouses with cool, cold, and frozen features. These warehouses must be designed to maintain the freshness of products, prevent changes in their physical and chemical structures, and avoid spoilage that could impact human health.
Products are stored in warehouses of different specifications according to their physical characteristics. For example, while products like ice cream, fish, and pizza are stored at -22 degrees, margarine and chocolate derivative products are preserved between +4 and +18 degrees.
To prevent breaks in the chain, temperature and humidity controls in cold rooms must be performed regularly, and homogeneous heat distribution inside the room must be ensured. Physical and operational arrangements must be made to prevent heat loss, and the warehouse must have an infrastructure that is easy to clean.
The number of cold storage facilities operating in Turkey is around 2,000. These warehouses are generally concentrated in commercial hubs with high market potential like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Gaziantep, and Diyarbakir, as well as centers where agricultural storage products are grown in abundance such as Manisa, Isparta, Bursa, Yalova, Denizli, and Adana.
